What is A Mandala

The mandala is a colourful and impressive circular creation, familiar to us from many artworks but in fact itโ€™s much more than that.

Ancient Times:
In different cultures it represents the circle that summarizes the essence of life. Mandala paintings appeared many years ago in various cultures and continents, some of them already in the early human caves. There have been discovered megaliths (circle of mandala-shaped stones) that are thousands of years old.
The Indians used it for healing, in Tibet it symbolizes the cycle of life and death and in Judaism it has been mentioned in the Kabbalah where the Tree of Life is based on the mandilionย structure and the David shield symbol for dividing a circle into six parts.ย
In ancient caves paintings and engravings of circles and spirals were found. Native American shamans created mandalas in healing and thanksgiving rituals, the Tibetan mandala symbolizes the cycle of life and death and is an integral part of the process of initiating the Tibetan monks.
The word originates from the ancient Indian language, Sanskrit, which means "a circle containing essence" or "a holy circle" or a "cyclical energy circle" and it implies the psychological and mystical meaning given to it in different cultures. The mandala is a creation that begins from the center point (Bindu in Sanskrit, i.e. the divine point) and expands within a fixed pattern of circles. The mandalas represent the entire universe. It is linked to the winding movement of consciousness, and to the sacred geometry, as symbols of worship in many religions, in the world of psychology and in the healing world.
Modern Day Psychology:
Mandela attributes a "representation of the unconscious self" within which many "natural circles" such as the uterus, the eyeball, the sun and the earth. The connection to circles existed in all ancient cultures, and they gave Mandela various symbolic meanings that connect it to holiness and life forces.
In recent decades, the mandala broke through the traditional boundaries and became a diagnostic and therapeutic tool in art. The person who paved her way to this position in the Western world was none other than Carl Jung, the pioneer of psychoanalysis and student of Freud.
According to Carl Gustav Jung - the father of analytical psychology- the circle that encloses the mandala symbolizes the boundaries of the self, and the circle outside the mandala represents the environment and the outside world. Jung worked in the field for years and concluded that the mandala is a psychological experience that expresses what takes place in the subconscious.
In Nature:
The mandala pattern is clearly present in nature in flowers, acorns, snowflakes and I especially like the wonderful image of creating a "natural mandala". When you throw a stone into the water, circular ripples are created, each ripple attracts another ripple and thus a mandala is actually created, each step attracts another step, an instinctive, unplanned, simple and intuitive processย allowing nature do its thing.
Structure:
The mandala is usually a circular diagram consisting of five points, representing five elements in the human soul, and five points in space - north, south, east, west and centre. It can be seen that Hindu temples and many other religious institutions were built as mandalas, circular structures, where the sides go around the middle.
The mandala developed in many cultures at the same time, the circle and the center of the circle are also important in Judaism - the story of the dwellers of the circle and in the book of Zohar (Tashabi vol. 1) it is written: "You have no circle in the world that is not made from one point standing in the middle... and this point standing in the middle takes all the light and shines to the body and enlighten everything".
Circular and spiral works have been found since time immemorial.
Our journey as humans begins in a round womb, our eye structure is round, our cells have a clear DNA centre. Ours is spiral, and our tribal bonfires gathered around a central bonfire. We are circular people in our essence. And intuitively we will always return to the shape of the circle.
Benefits:
Mandala has many abilities to improve emotional functioning skills and learning and cognitive functions. Clinical studies testify to the effect of mandalas in balancing tensions, reducing pain and as a tool for treatment and balance in everyday life.
By observing the shapes of the mandala, it is possible to reach a meditative state, which can be used to dive into meditation, or as a tool to focus attention, which relaxes and clears the mind and allows us to silence our incessant internal dialogue. Living in an environment of mandalas creates a new dynamic that enables conscious observation and inner healing and is therefore a tool and space for personal development.
